Brian Micheal Bendis (born August 18, 1967, Cleveland Ohio) is one of the most influential and prominent comic book writers of the last decade, especially known for his distinctive narrative style and his significant contribution to Marvel’s universe and DC as well.
Born and raised in a Jewish family in University Heights, Ohio, Bendis attended the Hebrew Academy of Cleveland, a Modern Orthodox school for youngsters. From an early age, he developed a strong passion for comics, later stating that he would have pursued the comic book artists career and to be hired as an official artist for Spider-Man, when he was 5 years old.
In 1990, he started his career as an independent comic creator, writing and illustrating noir-inspired works as Goldfish, Jinx, Fire and Torse, originally published by Caliber Press and later republished by Image Comics.
In 2000, Bendis achieved the breakthrough of his career with Ultimate Spider man series. The series reintroduced Spider – Man to a new generation of readers, and Bendis went on to write more than 200 issues.
In 2004, he relaunched the Avenger franchise with New Avengers and commenced working on the storyline of numerous and legendary series such as Avengers Disassembled, Secret War, House of M, Secret Invasion, Siege, and Age of Ultron.
Furthermore, he co-created some of Marvel’s legendary and unforgettable characters, including Miles Morales, Jessica Jones, and Riri Williams (Ironheart).
In 2017, he signed an exclusive contract with DC Comics, making his debut with Action Comic #1000 issues before taking over the Superman series.
In 2020, his exclusive contract with DC ended, however he continued working with DC Comics as a freelance writer. During this period, he worked on numerous titles including Justice League and Naomi, the latter of which was adapted into a TV series for The CW.
Later, he launched the Jinxworld imprint, mainly dedicated to publishing his creator-owned works. Following the end of his partnership with DC Comics, Jinxworld found a new home at Dark Horse Comics in 2021, in which new series such as Joy Operations and new editions of earlier works, including Pearl, have been published.
At the same time, Bendis collaborated with André Lima Araújo on the fantasy trilogy Phenomena, published by Abram ComicArts between 2022 and 2023.
Throughought his career, Bendis received numerous awards, including five Eisner Award: Talent Deserving of Wider Recognition (1999), Best New Series for Powers (2001), Best writer of the year (2002-2003), and Best ongoing series for Daredevil (2003).
In 2015, Bendis earned the Peabody Award as co-creator and consulting editor of Jessica Jones TV series.
Among Mirage Comics’ upcoming releases, the publisher will present Torso at Lucca Comics & Games for the first time ever.
He will be a guest at Lucca Comics & Games in collaboration with Mirage Comics from 28th October to 1st November.
