Claudio Castellini, born on March 3, 1966, is a true master of international comics. He began working with Sergio Bonelli Editore, illustrating Dylan Dog at first and, shortly afterwards, Nathan Never, for which he was the lead graphic artist.
In 1993, Castellini began his partnership with Marvel Comics by making comic covers for several and legendary series, including Fantastic Four Unlimited and Silver Surfer graphic novel, written by Ron Marx. This one, in particular, later achieved the Yellow Kid award – Italy’s most significant comic award. Since then, he became the first Italian comic artists to work with Marvel USA, becoming a pioneer of Italian influence that would expand in later years.
He went on to work on the “century crossover” – Marvel vs. DC – and several stories featuring Spider-Man and Conan. He also worked with Dark Horse, making the series Predator Demon’s Gold, which received an Eisner Award nomination and a spin-off of Darth Vader titled Extinction for Star Wars Tales.
In 2001, he illustrated The Call for Batman Black & White. In 2003, he returned to work with Marvel Comics and Paul Jenkins for the miniseries Wolverine: The End. At that time, he was the official cover artist for Batman: Gotham Knights and also illustrated several covers for Superman/Batman and Countdown to Final Crisis.
In the following years, he chose to focus mainly on collecting, collaborating sporadically with Marvel and DC. Castellini’s last work for DC was Man and Superman written by Marv Wolfman, a story recounting Superman’s first appearance by Clark Kent’s point of view.
Over the past few years, he has illustrated the variant cover of Justice League #48 and Silver Surfer: Rebirth #1. In 2023, Panini Comics planned to reprint his 1993 Silver Surfer graphic novel, Dangerous Artifacts. The outcome is a new edition of a thirty-year work that stood the test of time and proved to be the crux of the superhero genres.
By then end of 2025, he collaborated with Marvel and DC Comics on several comic covers, including Fantastic Four Fanfare #2, Fantastic Four #1, Death of the Silver Surfer #2-3-4-5, Doomed 2099 #1, and Superman #30. Forthcoming issue is the variant cover of The Flash #36, out in August.
