Go Nagai (born September 6, 1945, in Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture) is a leading Japanese manga artist and character creator.
He rose to prominence in 1968 with Harenchi Gakuen and went on to create a string of globally renowned works, including Devilman, Mazinger Z, Cutie Honey, UFO Robot Grendizer, and Kotetsu Jeeg. In particular, the innovative concept of "the protagonist piloting a giant robot," established in Mazinger Z, became the foundation of robot anime culture, gaining enthusiastic support mainly in Asia and Europe.
In Italy, Grendizer (Goldrake) became a social phenomenon, and Nagai's works continue to be loved across generations. Furthermore, Jeeg Robot d’Acciaio (Kotetsu Jeeg) enjoyed immense popularity in Italy, and its influence led to the creation of the 2015 live-action film They Called me Jeeg (Lo chiamavano Jeeg Robot). This is a symbolic example of how Nagai's work has influenced contemporary Italian culture.
Nagai also boldly adapted Dante Alighieri's epic poem The Divine Comedy (Divina Commedia) into a manga, demonstrating his unique expressive ability to bridge classical literature and pop culture. This endeavor resonated strongly with Italian readers, generating cultural dialogue.
In his hometown of Wajima City, the "Go Nagai Wonderland Museum," showcasing Go Nagai's creative world, was established and has become a popular destination for many fans. However, the city suffered extensive damage in the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake. Nagai has expressed his support for reconstruction efforts and continues to send messages of encouragement to his hometown through his works.
