Lucca Comics & Games has entered into a significant partnership with the National Central Library of Florence, an institution responsible for the conservation, protection and promotion of ancient and modern collections, that collects documents of cultural interest intended for public use, in any format, with a view to establishing the National Archive of Italian Publishing.

The Florentine institution boasts the most significant collection of periodicals and, in particular, a vast collection of comic books from across the country, including some 800,000 items from the recent donation of the Gianni Bono collection – Gianni Bono being a publisher, historian and scholar of comics.

It is precisely from the Gianni Bono collection that some of the items and works to be displayed in the exhibition ‘Lucca Legacy: a Comics & Games story’ originate. Furthermore, as a result of this collaboration, the National Central Library of Florence will, from this year onwards, begin preserving self-published comics: the first volumes donated by the festival will be those nominated for the 2026 Self Area Award.
