How can we reconnect with the creators who shaped the identity of D&D? How can we preserve the spirit of the classic settings whilst opening them up to the future? And which new voices will take up the baton to write the next chapter in the history of the world’s most famous role-playing game?

Announced at Gen Con 2026, D&D Icons is the new creative programme that brings together some of the most important figures in the history of Dungeons & Dragons with today’s development team, to put the settings and characters that have defined the imagination of generations of players back at the heart of the game. Joe Manganiello, the programme’s Chief Creative Officer, alongside Tracy and Laura Hickman, explores the vision behind a project that weaves together heritage and innovation: from the return of Dragonlance, featuring its original creators, to a return to the roots of Greyhawk through previously unpublished material by Gary Gygax, right through to new perspectives on the legendary Drizzt Do’Urden.
